7. Names & Introductions
How to Say Your Name and Ask for Theirs.
In Moroccan culture, introducing yourself is the first step toward building trust. It usually starts with a greeting, followed by your name.
1. Telling Your Name
To say „My name is…“, use the word Smiti. It’s that simple!
| English | Transliteration | Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| My name is… | Smiti… | سميتي… |
| I am [Name] | Ana [Name] | أنا… |
2. Asking for Their Name
Depending on who you are talking to, you ask „What is your name?“ like this:
| English | Transliteration | Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| What is your name? | Shnu smitek? | شنو سميتك؟ |
3. The Courteous Follow-up
After exchanging names, it is very important to say „Nice to meet you.“ In Darija, we use a word that means „we are honored.“
| English | Transliteration | Arabic |
|---|---|---|
| Nice to meet you | Mtsharfin | متشرفين |
